Abeka provides a comprehensive curriculum for all of our grade levels. Our students get actual workbooks for literacy (phonics, reading, and writing) and arithmetic lessons that are aligned to research practices, a biblical-worldview, and national learning standards. We also utilize Abeka’s curriculum to guide our social studies lessons school-wide.
Our early elementary classes use Literacy Footprints for their small group reading materials. Literacy Footprints is a complete guided reading system developed by Jan Richardson and Michèle Dufresne. The lessons are based on Jan’s Next Step Forward in Guided Reading and Jan and Michèle’s coauthored Next Step Forward in Word Study and Phonics. This reading system is based on the most recent educational research and is utilized by many of our area public schools as well.
SCA’s mission to foster a joy for learning is supported by our science curriculum called Generation Genius. Generation Genius is a K-8 teaching resource that brings school science standards to life through fun and educational videos paired with lesson plans, activities, quizzes, reading material and more. Their amazing videos are produced in partnership with the National Science Teaching Association, and aligned to standards in all 50 states.
While SCA is proud that we do not have to put our students through constant standardized testing and benchmarking, we do regularly check our students’ progress through curriculum-based assessments and report their skills on standards referenced report cards quarterly. Additional screening and assessing are done with individuals or small groups as appropriate for dyslexia and other learning difficulties.
